NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News Shipbuilding on Monday started a new rule, no e-cigarettes on company property.
The company will no longer allow the use, possession, or storage of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices.
Duane Bourne, the Media Relations Manager with Newport News Shipbuilding said the new policy comes after a higher amount of vaping and e-cigarette use inside and outside of the shipyard. It's also due to a heightened awareness of fire prevention in and around critical infrastructure and equipment.
The decision is also in line with the shipbuilding's customer, the U.S. Navy. Our decision also aligns with our Navy customer that instituted a policy
"We recognize that this new policy will impact those who vape and use e-cigarettes," Bourne said. "The company offers several no-cost and low-cost tobacco cessation programs to help employees stop smoking."
