NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Hilton Elementary will reopen Thursday following nearly three days of thorough cleaning to help remove lead-based paint discovered inside the building.
According to school officials, staff was stripping paint to prepare for a new coat when the lead-based paint was found.
The paint stripping was ceased and a certified industrial hygienist was called in to guide cleanup and conduct air quality tests.
Cleanup of the lead-based paint began Monday evening and continued Tuesday and Wednesday.
A professional crew cleaned the building and environmental tests now indicate the building is ready for the return of students and staff, school officials said Wednesday.
