Woman shot, climbs onto school bus in Newport News

Police said the shooting happened inside a home in the 3300 block of Roanoke Avenue.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A woman is in the hospital after police say she was shot and then climbed on top of a school bus in Newport News on Friday morning.

According to Newport News police, the shooting happened inside a home in the 3300 block of Roanoke Avenue around 7:40 a.m.

Officers arrived to find a woman who reportedly climbed onto the hood of a school bus prior to their arrival. Investigators said she was suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

A business owner, who chose not to be identified, said the woman walked into his store begging for help.

“I was on duty on my daily routine at the store and that this lady came into my store just screaming and saying, I was shot, I was shot," said the business owner.

He said he called police and the woman left the store seeking help elsewhere.

"Many of the people gathered around and she stopped the bus and for some time she climbed on the bus," said the business owner.

A spokesperson for Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) said the bus had been stopped at an intersection when the woman got onto the hood of the bus. The business owner said the students and others recorded the incident on their cell phones.

“Everyone, the adults [and] the children," the business owner said. "Everyone had their phones with them in their hands and they recorded the whole scenario."

Newport News police said the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment, and no children on the school bus were hurt. NNPS said the bus remained at the scene while a second bus arrived to take the students to school. Their parents were notified, and their school's principal and a student support specialist met with them when they arrived.

Police have not said what led to the shooting or if a suspect is in custody, but did say the suspect and victim knew each other.

The shooting remains under investigation. If you have any information that can help police, you're asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-562-5887 or online at P3Tips.com.
