Scam Alert

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Authorities want to warn residents of a possible scam being carried out by two men in the south section of Newport News.

Police have been receiving reports of two men knocking on doors and asking to see citizens' Dominion Virginia Power bills.

The citizens say it was one Caucasian male and one African-American male. The men were not driving a Dominion truck and seemed to only be targeting elderly residents.

The exact motive is unknown, however the men may be attempting to make their way inside the citizen's home or trying to obtain account numbers.

A Dominion Virginia Power spokesperson released the following statement regarding these incidents:

If you are uncertain whether someone claiming to be a Dominion employee actually works for the company, first request to see the employee's photo identification card for verification. (All company employees carry a photo ID card. Even then, never allow anyone in your house or apartment who claims to be a Dominion representative unless you have scheduled an appointment or reported a problem.

Residents are encouraged to call the Dominion Virginia Power helpline at 1-866-DOM-HELP to ask if the person at your door is a legitimate employer or vendor of Dominion Virginia Power.
