Newport News police officer accused of raping child

Robert Jones has worked for the Newport News Police Department since 2007. Police said he knew the child at the center of the sexual assault case.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News police arrested a fellow officer on Friday. He's accused of assaulting a child sexually.

On June 6, 2018, the child filed a complaint against Officer Robert Jones. Detectives said he and the child knew each other. Police arrested him after an investigation.

Jones, 46, lives in the 800 block of Catalina Drive in Newport News. He faces charges of rape (two counts), carnal knowledge, forcible sodomy,  taking indecent liberties (four counts), and criminal solicitation.

The department placed Jones on administrative leave, without pay pending the results of the administrative investigation. 

He has worked for the Newport News Police Department since 2007, and he currently is assigned to the North Precinct. 

“We take these allegations very seriously and are working closely with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office regarding the criminal charges. In addition, the Department has been conducting an extensive administrative investigation regarding the officer involved,” said Chief of Police, Steve Drew.
