Newport News Police: Man arrested after assaulting two officers

A man is behind bars after assaulting two Newport News police officers.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A man is behind bars after assaulting two Newport News police officers.

Officers responded to reports of a fight in the area of Jefferson Avenue and 44th Street around 1:45 a.m. May 2. Upon arrival, they saw a large group of people running from the area.

Officers were checking the area when they found a man lying in the road in the 600 block of 45th Street. Police say the man was bleeding from his nose and officers noticed a strong smell of alcohol.

While police were trying to figure out what happened, the man, identified as 32-year-old Terry Wayne Hawn, of Hampton, became uncooperative and hit two officers in the face.

Hawn was subdued and taken into custody. He is charged with one count of being drunk in public and two counts of felony assault on a law enforcement officer.

Hawn is in the custody of the Newport News City Jail.
