15 and 17-year-old boys dead after shooting in Newport News

Just after 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to 4900 Rochester Court. One boy died at the scene and the other succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News police are investigating a shooting that happened Tuesday night and left two teenage boys dead.

Just after 9 p.m., officers were dispatched to 4900 Rochester Court for a report of a shooting, according to a police press release.

When officers arrived, they found two boys, ages 15 and 17, outside suffering from gunshot wounds. One was pronounced dead at the scene while the other was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

“It’s bad and crazy," said a nearby resident who did not want to be identified. "Our young people don’t value life.”

Wednesday morning, investigators returned to the area to try and gather more information from residents. Multiple people who did not want to be identified said they heard several shots Tuesday night.

The shooting comes after Newport News students returned to the classroom for the new school year Monday.

“I was just talking to a teacher just yesterday evening," a resident told 13News Now. "She said school just started and these first two days were worse than the whole year.”

Neighbors said they are heartbroken and disappointed to learn gun violence claimed the lives of these two teens. One woman who recently moved to this section of the city hopes the victims aren’t the boys her grandchildren are friends with. Many people said they wonder when the violence will stop.

A spokesperson for Newport News Public Schools said she can't at this time confirm if the teens are students within the division.

Police say there is currently no suspect information to release. Anyone with information about what happened is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-562-5887 or submit a tip online using P3 Tips.
