FAIRFAX, Va. — A Newport News man was killed while trying to change a tire alongside an interstate in Northern Virginia, Virginia State Police said.

The accident happened shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 10 in Fairfax County.

Troopers said 30-year-old Gregory Bruington of Newport News was outside of his vehicle on the shoulder of westbound Interstate 495 at the 175-mile marker, changing a tire on a 2017 VW Golf. That's when state police said a 2003 Dodge Ram driven by 26-year-old Carlos L. Nunez Morales ran off the interstate and crashed into Bruington and the VW Golf.

Bruington died at the scene. A passenger inside the Golf was also seriously hurt in the crash.

VSP said Nunez Morales had minor injuries. He was allegedly not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Nunez Morales is charged with driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, and driving with a suspended or revoked license.

The crash remains under investigation.
