10th Annual One City Marathon Weekend kicks off in Newport News

Organizers called it a "one-of-a-kind, world class experience."

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Scores of runners took part in the 10th Annual Newport News One City Marathon Weekend.

The Newport News Shipbuilding-presented "one-of-a-kind, world class experience" runs both Saturday and Sunday.

"One City Marathon invites participants of all levels and experience, whether you’ve been running for years or it’s your first race," the race's website reads.

The Sentara Health Plans Maritime 5K kicked off at Newport News City Center at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Then on Sunday, racers will compete in the One City Marathon that starts in Newport News Park, goes through the length of the city, and finishes at the Victory Arch in downtown Yard District.

"This is one of my favorite races for the One City Marathon," said Shelia Branson, Flat-Out event volunteer and runner. "It's a great opportunity for the city and the runners and our community to come together. And we just support each other and have a great weekend."

Post-race celebrations are expected in Newport News City Center both days.

In a release, organizers said runners planning to participate spanned 36 states, Washington D.C., Canada and Mexico.
