And this month for national stroke awareness the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wants you to remember the acronym "FAST."

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News is Hampton Roads' first city designated as "Stroke Smart," partnering with the Virginia Department of Health and Riverside Health to roll out a new campaign.

As part of Stroke Awareness Month, Mayor Phillip Jones said he wants Newport News to be a leader in fighting the condition.

"At the end of the day it's the bystander that often prevents and speeds up the recovery of the stroke process," said Jones. "So we need to educate in order to save."

The Stroke Smart Virginia public health initiative was launched as an effort to reduce pre-hospital delays and increase timely stroke treatment through simple education and actions.

Strokes are the fifth leading cause of death for Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is also one of the most preventable conditions, as doctors estimate 80% of strokes can be prevented.

Jones said in the crucial seconds a stroke is happening, people can save lives if they can recognize the signs.

"Take a look at how they are breathing, look at their face, look at their speech, and that way you are able to call 911," said Jones. "Soon everyone in Newport News will know what this looks like."

The city’s Community Assistance Response (CARE) Program and Riverside Health are working to roll out the city-wide campaign. Those living in the city will soon see notices with the signs listed on TV, radio, and more.

“As a proud partner in Newport News’ Stroke Smart City initiative, Riverside is dedicated to leveraging our expertise and resources to enhance stroke awareness and response in the community,” says Dr. Thomas Taghon, Chief Medical Officer for Riverside Regional Medical Center. “By combining our efforts with the city and other local agencies, we are not only educating our residents but also advancing our capabilities to provide timely and effective stroke treatments. Together, we are committed to reducing the impact of strokes and improving health outcomes for all our citizens.”

Future partnerships in regards to this campaign are planned with businesses and healthcare providers in Newport News.
