Newport News family files $10M lawsuit in officer-involved shooting

Kawanza Beaty, 23, was shot and killed on July 4 during a chase in the southeast community. He was armed with an unloaded sawed off shotgun.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- The family of a Newport News man killed last summer has filed a wrongful death lawsuit for $10 million.

The suit was filed Thursday morning in Newport News Circuit Court against Police Chief Richard Myers and Officer Randy Gibson.

Kawanza Beaty, 23, was shot and killed on July 4 during a chase in the southeast community. He was armed with an unloaded sawed off shotgun.

James Ellenson is the family's attorney.  He said Thursday that the main reason for the lawsuit is to find out what happened in a neutral setting.

"We haven't seen any of their investigation. They refuse to give anybody anything, it isn't transparent," Ellenson said.

Another lawsuit is pending against Officer Gibson in federal court for his involvement a different shooting, according to Ellenson.

Gibson is an eight-year veteran of the police department.

Beaty's father Clyde Dargan said, "We're fighting to make sure his unborn child and his stepson are taken care of."
