Newport News designates 'cooling relief' centers amidst high temperatures

Another hot weekend pushed Newport News city leaders to open cooling centers around the city.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. —

While it's not nearly as hot as last weekend, being outside for long periods in this heat can be dangerous. This is why Newport News designated seven different cooling stations around the city.

They are located at Pearl Baily Library, Main Street Library, Grissom Library, Achievable Dream Tennis Center, Brittingham-Midtown Community Center, Denbigh Community Center, and Four Oaks Day Service Center.

The cooling centers provide places for people to cool off in the heat, and stay hydrated.

Mary Blackwell works at Brittingham-Midtown Community Center. She didn't notice an increase in the amount of people in the building on Saturday, but having the center open is a blessing to the public.

"When they're hot like that and they come in from the heat, we have a water cooler with ice, with cups in it so they can get, you know, cool off all a little bit. They come in here, go to the pool to cool off or, you know, things like that." Blackwell said.
