NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A new Assistant Chief has been named for the Newport News Police Department.
Captain Michael Grinstead officially assumed his new duties as Assistant Chief of the Support Bureau on October 16, filling the vacant position created by the retirement of Assistant Chief William Sturgis in September.
Assistant Chief Grinstead began his career with the Newport News Police Department in 1982 as an auxiliary officer and in April of 1983, he became a full-time officer. During his career, he has held numerous positions throughout the department to include the Tactical Team, Police Motors, and the Marine Unit. Assistant Chief Grinstead rose through the ranks and in 2009, he was promoted to Captain and has served as the North and Central Precinct Commander as well as the Organized Crime Division Commander.
Assistant Chief Grinstead is a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and retired in 2014 from the Navy reserves after 23 years of service.
Additional recent promotions include Lieutenant David Sutton promoted to Captain and now serves as the Central Precinct Commander. Sergeants Jerrell Hardy and Randall Petrosky were promoted to Lieutenants. Lt. Hardy is assigned to Central Precinct, Watch III and Lt. Petrosky is assigned to North Precinct, Watch I.
