NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Low-priced grocery store ALDI has a new location open for business in Newport News.
The supermarket near the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Ed Wright Lane had its grand opening Thursday. The first 100 shoppers also received gift cards.
There is another ALDI store in the city, located on Bland Boulevard. There are also stores in Williamsburg, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach.
The Germany-based grocery chain has been aggressively expanding in the United States, where it now has more than 1,600 stores across the country.
German rival Lidl is now also diving into the U.S. market, with its first locations in the country currently under construction in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth. The first Lidl stores are expected to open this summer.
