Meeting on the future of Huntington Middle School

The school needs a new HVAC system, new floors, ceilings, and plumbing - which would cost millions to fix.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- The Newport News School Board will try to figure out what's next for Huntington Middle School on Tuesday. The board is set to vote on a resolution about the aging building.

The school needs a new HVAC system, new floors, ceilings, and plumbing - which would cost millions to fix.

The money to replace Huntington Middle keeps getting cut out of the city's capital improvement plan. Several board members say the school will be *unsafe* for students next school year.

“I’m just afraid that a roof will fall in, the air conditioner doesn't work... the third floor isn't uninhabitable,” School Board Chairman Gary Hunter told 13News Now.

If passed, the resolution will allow the school board to study the need to transfer students to other schools, and other potential uses for the building.

We're told before any rezoning decisions are made, there will be a number of public meetings to get parent input.
