Man in custody after allegedly assaulting woman, abducting her from Newport News

YORKTOWN, Va. (WVEC) – A man is in custody after he allegedly abducted a woman and threaten to kill her Saturday evening in an incident which began in Newport News, moved into York County, then ending back in Newport News.

According to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, 21-year-old Charles Cyril Wightman was arrested with the assistance of Newport News Police after threatening to kill a 21-year-old woman in Newport News, punching her in the face, then taking her to York County.

Wightman and the victim - a York County resident - know each other.

Deputies from York Poquoson Sheriff's Office were initially dispatched to the 400 block of Wolf Trap Road at around 10:30 p.m. responding to a report of an armed subject in a 2004 Red Jeep Liberty. By the time they arrived, Wightman had already fled the scene on foot into Newport News, and was believed to have a handgun and a sawed off shotgun. Newport News Police Department also responded to the 400 block of Wolf Trap Road with a K-9 unit to aid in the search.

Wightman was subsequently spotted by a York Poquoson Sheriff's Office deputy near the York County/Newport News border on Denbigh Ave., and was taken into custody a short time later with the assistance of Newport News Police.

Wightman is currently being held in Newport News, and faces charges in that city of Abduction (because the incident began in Newport News) Simple Assault, Brandishing, Use of a firearm in commission of a felony, two counts of Possesion of a Firearm by a Felon, and having been served with an emergency protection order.

Wightman also has current warrants for his arrest in York County for Assault and Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, driving while suspended, and Evade and Elude from an incident on March 30, 2018.
