Man charged with DUI after hitting Newport News police officer's vehicle

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A police officer in a marked vehicle was hit by a truck Saturday night, Newport News Police said.

Around 9:30 p.m. the officer was stopped at a red light near Prince Drew Road and Warwick Boulevard when he was hit from behind by the truck, according to police spokesperson MPO Brandon Maynard.

After the crash, the truck driver fled the scene and an officer-involved pursuit began. The chase ended near the Riverside entrance off Warwick Boulevard when the truck hit a vehicle driven by a woman, Maynard said.

The woman was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The man driving the truck, 57-year-old Waverly Callicutt of Hampton, was taken into custody.

Callicutt is charged with:

  • DUI 3rd or Subsequent within 10 years
  • Accident: Fail to Report Injury During Accident X2
  • Driving After Forfeiture of License
  • Disorderly Conduct
  • Traffic Signal Violation
  • Unsafe/Defective Equipment
  • Regulations: Laned Traffic, and Disregard/Elude Law Enforcement Command

The officer involved in the crash was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The Newport News Crash Team Unit is investigating.
