Man accused of shooting gun at CNU was trying to get lemonade, according to court documents

Kyle Rumsey, 28, wasn't connected to the school, according to university officials.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — New court documents obtained by 13News Now revealed more details about the shots fired incident at Christopher Newport University in Newport News last Tuesday.

The documents state that Kyle Rumsey, 28 was shot at the David Student Union building to get lemonade, and that he kicked a window to enter, injuring himself in the process.

The incident was caught on camera, according to the documents, which said that officers saw Rumsey standing in front of a window that leads to a common dining hall, bleeding heavily from his right leg with a gun in his pocket. There were four bullet holes in the window, and a mark believed to come from a bullet on the wall below the window.

He also made comments to officers, saying, "Shoot me, I am already dead," according to the documents.

Rumsey doesn't work at or attend the school, according to university officials. However, they said he was believed to be accompanying a visitor and signed in as a resident's guest.

He's been charged with five counts of discharging a firearm, five counts of reckless handling of firearms, one count of burglary and one count of malicious activation of a fire alarm.

CNU officials said Rumsey's injuries happened before he was taken into custody.

President William "Bill" Kelly wrote a statement sent to the CNU community late Tuesday afternoon, detailing the incident and thanking the officers of the CNU Police Department and the actions of residence life staff members.

"Our Police Department de-escalated the situation before any member of our community could be harmed," Kelly wrote. "They then worked quickly, calling on years of experience and training, to determine that there was no continuing threat to the campus."

Kelly encouraged people in the CNU community to make sure they are signed up for university alerts and to seek out available support services.
