NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Shoppers at Walmart in Newport News got a scare on Saturday night.
Around 9:40 p.m. police and firefighters were called to the store on Jefferson Avenue after receiving reports of a hand grenade in the parking lot.
The bomb squad got there and determined it was not a live one, describing the ordinance as being "similar to a souvenir." Officials temporarily closed the parking lot area in an abundance of caution.
The device was removed and the store was able to resume normal operations after a little more than an hour. Firefighters said there was no danger to the public.
The fire department's investigation is still ongoing.
