2 dead after striking tree in fiery I-64 crash near Newport News, York Co. border

The driver and passenger, who have now been identified as husband and wife from Pennsylvania, died as a result of the crash.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Two people were killed in a fiery crash off Interstate 64 near the border of Newport News and York County on Monday, January 1, according to Virginia State Police (VSP).

Just before 6:15 p.m., VSP says a Ford Econoline Truck or U-Haul crossed all lanes of the interstate, running off the roadway and into a tree near Lee Hall and Yorktown Road. The vehicle then caught fire, closing multiple westbound lanes and the 247 exit ramp.

The driver was identified as 46-year-old Jeremiah Dukes and 44-year-old Amanda Dukes of Pennsylvania. They were husband and wife.

Neither the driver nor the passenger survived.

"Due to the damage of the vehicle caused by the crash and fire, both driver and passenger are unable to be identified," Sgt. Michelle Anya with VSP said in a release that came out soon after the crash happened.

It's unclear why the driver veered off the interstate.
