NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — It's a project years in the making!

On Tuesday night, Newport News School Board members got an update on plans to replace Huntington Park Middle School.

In 2018,  the school board voted to close the building and build a new one. A groundbreaking ceremony was originally planned for earlier this month, but it got delayed due to weather. A new date has not yet been set.

The goal is to open a new Huntington Middle School by June 2026.

Also on Tuesday night, the school board got a look at the new "safe-secure entrances" installed at two elementary schools -- Newsome Park and Richneck -- over the summer. Construction at Newsome Park is about 85% done, while the work at Richneck is about 65% complete. Both projects should wrap up by September 18.
