NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A man is dead after a shooting in Newport News Wednesday night
Newport News police say that shots were fired on Roanoke Avenue near 33rd Street around 11:45 p.m. When officers arrived, they found 18-year-old Ryan Pipkin outside of a residence suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
A police spokesperson said this marks the 42nd homicide in the city so far this year.
Nearby Newport News resident Percy said crime is nothing new in his neighborhood, and shootings in this area happen too often. He’s not surprised to hear about another one happening Wednesday night.
“I’m still worried about the one that happened down the street,” he said.
To air on the side of caution, Haney said he avoids certain areas of the city.
“The best thing for me to do is stay away from a lot of people,” he said.
Other community members told 13News Now they heard police sirens and saw flashing lights Wednesday night. Though, they made sure to stay away from the area.
