NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The medical examiner is working to identify a man who was killed in a weekend crash in Newport News.
According to the Newport News Police Department, the single-vehicle accident happened around 4:15 a.m. Saturday. Officers arrived at the intersection of Warwick Boulevard and Nettles Drive to find an SUV on fire.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police said the SUV had been driving northbound on Warwick Blvd when it left the roadway and drove onto a raised curb and sidewalk before hitting a traffic pole head-on, causing the vehicle to burst into flames.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
