CSX derailment in Newport News cancels Amtrak trains on Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A CSX train derailed in Newport News after striking two trees on the tracks, according to a CSX spokesperson.

It happened about 2 p.m. Saturday, Austin Staton with CSX said. The location was near Denbigh Boulevard and Richneck Road in Newport News.

There were no spills, leaks or injuries of the crew reported, Staton added.

All traffic was temporarily halted while crews worked to re-rail the locomotive. Normal operations resumed on the line around 9 p.m.

Amtrak posted on X that train 99 from Richmond to Newport News and train 124 from Newport News to Richmond were canceled on Saturday evening. Amtrak said it was in the process of arranging alternate bus transportation for impacted customers on train 99.
