NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A vehicle crash involving a marked police vehicle is blocking traffic on Jefferson Avenue Thursday afternoon.
The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Mercury Boulevard. Police say two other vehicles were involved in the crash.
A spokesperson for the Newport News Police Department said that the officer driving the marked police vehicle had his lights and sirens going while driving to a call for service. As he tried to drive through the intersection, he was hit by a black Nissan, according to police.
The impact caused the police vehicle to hit a white Ford, the police spokesperson said.
The driver of the Nissan, a man, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, police say.
No one else was injured.
Both northbound and southbound traffic is blocked at that intersection, as the NNPD Crash Team investigates the scene.
