NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Two Newport News officers who were involved in a shooting that took place in January have been cleared in a review by the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
The officers were identified as Jamie Acree, a 19-year veteran on the police force, and Sergeant Brendan Bartley, a 17-year veteran.
The shooting that was under review took place Jan. 14 between one suspect and the two officers in the 1300 block of Roanoke Ave.
However, beforehand, authorities responded to an initial incident where they found two men, 38-year-old Cadre Antwoine Gray of Norfolk and 30-year-old Quinton Antonio Kelly, murdered inside a minivan.
A short time later, police confronted a person who fit the description of the possible shooter, upon which both officers fired their weapons and hit the suspect in the shoulder and stomach.
The suspect was transported to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The incident put four Newport News schools on lockdown.
Chief Myers provided the following statement regarding the review:
“We are appreciative of the review by the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and our own internal investigation affirmed that the officers exercised professionalism and restraint even as they had to use their lethal weapons to stop the threat they were presented with. As this case proceeds through the criminal justice system, it will become even more evident that Sgt. Bartley and Officer Acree acted swiftly to protect the public from further harm and showed courage in facing down a suspect who they knew was capable of taking human lives. They were both returned to full duty at the conclusion of our internal review of the incident, with our confidence and appreciation.”
