'Bring Your Legislator to School Day' comes to Watkins Early Childhood Center Newport News

The visit was part of "Bring your Legislator to School Day" in Newport News.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Several Newport News legislators visited Watkins Early Childhood Center as part of "Bring your Legislator to School Day!"

There, they were welcomed by dozens of 4-year-olds who brought them inside their classrooms and showed off their skills in both English and Spanish.

"We really wanted them to see up close and personal what we do with our earliest learners and how we begin to build that foundation, so that they have a vision, they have an understanding of what we do so they can advocate for us," said Newport News Superintendent Michele Mitchell.

According to a recent report by the Legislative Audit and Review Commission, the majority of Virginia parents cannot afford rising childcare costs. It's why teachers and lawmakers say these early childcare centers are essential to not only provide relief to parents but also give structure to children.

"They are learning from each other, growing from one another," said Virginia Delegate Shelly Simonds. "What we saw today was really exciting and inspiring but we've got 82 students here in this bilingual early childhood program... we need to expand that."

Students thanked the legislators as they left the building with hugs, handwritten cards, and "stars." Students said they hoped the lawmakers come back next year.
