Arrest made in officer-involved shooting in Newport News

Authorities are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting in Newport News that left one man in the hospital Wednesday morning.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Authorities have arrested a man charged in connection to an officer-involved shooting that occurred in March in Newport News.

Detectives obtained arrest warrants charging 36-year-old Nicholas A. Christopher with brandishing a firearm, having oversized magazines and felony assault on a law enforcement officer.

Police responded to the shooting that left one man in the hospital early Wednesday, March 30.

Officials say at 1:50 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Thomas St. after receiving a report about a suicidal person. Christopher threatened suicide by cop.

Due to 10 past incidents this year with Christopher, several officers responded to the scene.

While officers were checking the area for the subject, two officers located a male armed with an AR-15 rifle and a handgun. He was also wearing a ballistic vest displaying the words "POLICE."

During the confrontation, officers challenged him, asking him to put the weapon down, and one shot was fired. Christopher was hit in the lower abdomen and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Newport News police released a tweet stating that the man injured was in stable condition.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Police say the two officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard for all officer-involved shootings.

Several officers on scene were wearing body cameras. All video is being reviewed at this time, however we cannot say for certain whether the actual incident was captured on video.

Christopher is currently behind bars at the Newport News City Jail.
