His father, William Reid, said his son was loved by a lot of people.

"Jerrod was a friendly guy, funny guy. All he wanted to do was have fun, laugh, joke," said William Reid.

Police found his son shot at the BP at 13797 Warwick Boulevard at Campbell Road/Tabbs Lane in Denbigh around 9:30 p.m. January 1.

Paramedics took the 23-year-old to the hospital where he died.

Shortly after the call, an officer spotted what looked like the suspects' vehicle and pursued it into Hampton. At one point, the chase went onto I-64, said Sergeant Randal Bailey.

The driver went into a neighborhood and crashed on Breckinridge Court near Big Bethel Road, then the two suspects got out and ran off.

Police from Hampton and Newport News searched for them into the late night with some officers looking in the area of Martha Lee Drive.

Reid, who lived in Newport News, didn't work at the BP, Bailey added.

William Reid told 13News Now the last time he saw his son was New Year's Eve. He addressed the large crowd of his son's friends Saturday and asked them for a favor.

"If you really respect my son and love my son, let's leave the violence stuff alone," William Reid said.

He told 13News Now, "Only a stranger would have pulled a stunt like this, because anybody that knows him or knows me wouldn't have done this."

There was no description of the suspects available, but the vehicle they were in has been recovered.
