NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Police have arrested and identified the suspect accused of a deadly double shooting in Newport News last week.
Laratio Lorenzo Dantzler, 33, was released from a local hospital and taken into custody by Newport News police Monday. Dantzler was wounded in a confrontation with officers last Thursday following a shooting that put four Newport News schools on lockdown.
On Thursday, Jan. 14, police responded to a crash near 14th St. and Wickham Ave. where, upon arrival, they found two men who had been shot in a van that had struck a parked car. The two men were pronounced dead at the scene.
Two officers later confronted Dantzler, who fit the description of the possible shooter. Both officers fired their weapons, hitting Dantzler in the abdomen. The officers were wearing body cameras, and the video they shot is being analyzed.
The two victims were later identified as 38-year-old Cadre Antwoine Grey of Norfolk and 30-year-old Quinton Antonio Kelly of Newport News.
Dantzler faces a slew of charges including two counts of first degree murder, two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, three counts of attempted robbery and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Four schools in the area were locked down for about two hours because of the shootings.
Police Chief Richard Myers says the search continues for a second suspect. Dantzler is expected to go before a judge in coming days.
