Newport News event honoring MLK Jr. feeding the community for free

Community members are feeding people on Sunday. No reservation is required and "no judgment, just service with a smile," followed by a gospel music concert.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Community members are coming together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and are feeding people in need and celebrating in song.

The Andrew Shannon FEEDING 5000 event is on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at New Beech Grove Baptist Church in Newport News. After the event at 4 p.m., eventgoers can attend the Andrew Shannon Gospel Music Celebration featuring Maurice Yancey and One Accord.

The event is free, open to the public, requires no reservation and promises "no judgment, just service with a smile."

Andrew Shannon FEEDING 5000 has served families and individuals for over 24 years in Virginia and "is the largest gathering of families in one setting for Food Distribution of pre-packaged meals" event organizers wrote in a news release.

Andrew Shannon is the event founder and organizer, made in part by Dr. Willard Maxwell Jr., Dominion Terminal Associates, Newport News Branch NAACP and more.
