7-year-old child seriously hurt in Newport News pedestrian accident

Police remain on scene investigating as of 11:20 a.m.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A child is seriously injured after being hit by a car on Jefferson Avenue Friday morning.

The Newport News Police Department responded to the scene in the 12000 block of Jefferson Avenue at about 9:06 a.m., according to department spokeswoman Lauryn Moss.

Officers found the 7-year-old boy in the roadway, and he was transported to a hospital with possible life-threatening injuries, Moss stated.

"A preliminary investigation revealed that the juvenile entered the roadway and was struck by a vehicle," Moss stated. 

She said the driver of the vehicle remained on the scene. The NNPD Crash Reconstruction Team also remains on the scene to investigate. The northbound lanes of Jefferson Avenue around Hogan Drive will remain closed while officers investigate the accident.
