NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Newport News 7-Eleven employee who accidentally shot himself during a fight earlier this month has been charged in connection to the incident, the Newport News Police Department said.
Police said the shooting happened at 7:11 p.m. on June 12, at the 7-Eleven located in the 12600 block of Nettles Drive. Officers arrived at the convenience store to find the employee, 28-year-old Liam Vaughn, suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police said Vaughn got into a fight with at least one customer outside of the business that turned physical. Vaughn accidentally fired his gun during the altercation, shooting himself in the process.
Police said on June 21, Vaughn was arrested and charged with shooting a firearm in a public place causing injury (felony), reckless handling of a firearm (misdemeanor), and concealed weapon carry (misdemeanor).
