At least 30 people report their vehicles in Newport News were broken into in 1 night, police say

Police received many reports of vehicles broken into near the city's downtown area on Monday. Many lots affected are used by Navy and shipbuilding personnel.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — At least 30 people in Newport News have come forward saying their vehicles were broken into Monday evening, police said.

The Newport News Police Department said the reports came from the downtown area. The heaviest concentration of incidents was near 30th Street, but some reports go as far as 61st Street.

Sonya Lee has lived in the Huntington Heights neighborhood for years and calls the neighborhood quiet and safe.

"I would walk down to the bus station every day, every other day, 2-3-4 times a week, and even come home in the dark,” Lee said.

According to police, the break-ins happened mostly in parking lots used by Navy and Newport News Shipbuilding personnel. Police said they are working with the Navy and Shipbuilding to increase security in the areas of the incidents.

Some employees I spoke with hadn't heard the news.

"I’m very surprised I didn’t hear anything about it especially when you said so many people have said something about it,” Jeff Peterson said.

Detectives have not identified any suspects and the investigation continues.

The police department is asking if there is anyone who had their vehicle broken into who has not previously reported it to police, they are encouraged to call the NNPD non-emergency line at (757)-247-2500.
