NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A citizen and a firefighter were hurt when an attached garage ignited in Newport News late Friday afternoon, officials said.
In a release, Newport News Fire Marshal's Office said the blaze was reported at a two-story home on Henry Clay Road near Jefferson Avenue just before 4:50 p.m. Heavy fire was coming from the attached garage when firefighters arrived.
Crews managed to contain most of the blaze to the garage and attic, officials said.
Both the citizen and firefighter injured were brought to a hospital for treatment. Officials said the firefighter was expected to be okay while the citizen suffered serious injuries.
The Red Cross is helping four others who were forced out of the home.
An investigation is underway to determine what caused the fire.
