HAMPTON, Va. — Virginia State Police (VSP) say a speeding driver trying to avoid being pulled over died in a single-vehicle crash in Hampton Friday afternoon.
Just after 12 p.m., a trooper witnessed a 2020 red Chrysler 300 sedan speeding on I-64 West, according to a VSP spokeswoman.
As the trooper pulled onto the roadway to conduct a traffic stop, police say the driver started going even faster and got off the interstate at the Hampton Roads Center Parkway exit.
The trooper drove up behind the vehicle on Hampton Roads Center Parkway, and that's when police say the driver accelerated and tried to take a right onto Big Bethel Road.
The driver, a 26-year-old woman, "lost control" of her vehicle, according to police, and crashed into a traffic light pole on the driver side. She died from her injuries.
State police have identified the woman as 26-year-old Diamond Elizabeth Brooks, of Newport News.
As of 2:30 p.m. state police were still at the scene gathering information and investigating the crash.
A police spokeswoman said the Hampton Commonwealth's Attorney was also at the scene, assisting with the investigation.
