HAMPTON, Va. — September is Hunger Action Month, a month dedicated to programs that raise awareness and inspire action to end hunger across America.
"No one is immune from being food insecure. You never know. It's an unexpected hardship,” said Donna Tighe, Director of Development of the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank.
In fact, according to the food bank, more than 61,000 people in Hampton Roads struggle food insecurity. That's why the The Virginia Peninsula Food Bank is partnering with Hampton Roads Transit for a special two-day food drive.
Multiple donation boxes have been placed at transit centers across Hampton and Newport News. They're asking for non-perishables, like pasta, peanut butter, canned meats and vegetables.
The goal is to lower food insecurity, one meal at a time. It's especially important, as inflation has increased the number of people struggling to find their next meal.
“Over the last year, we've seen an increase of over 35% of individuals needing help. The cost of food, fuel, utilities ... it's just really taking a toll on a lot of families," Tighe said.
“They're making difficult choices, whether it's to purchase food, pay their rent or pay for prescriptions. No one should be in that situation, where they have to make those difficult choices.”
These donations will help fill the shelves at the food bank.
If you’d like to donate, boxes will be at both transit centers Friday, starting at 5 a.m. Monetary donations can also be made anytime via the foodbank's website.
