Two kids on the road to recovery after being shot at Buckroe Beach

Police are still working to determine who is responsible for the shooting. A 12-year-old boy is still in the hospital in stable condition.

HAMPTON, Va. — Four people, including two children, were shot at Buckroe Beach Saturday night.

Hampton Police said a 12-year-old boy is still in the hospital in stable condition. The other three gunshot victims -- a 7-year-old girl, a 31-year-old woman, and a 52-year-old man -- suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

According to investigators, officers patrolling nearby around 8 p.m. Saturday, when they heard shots fired. They hurried to the beach, where they found the victims at different locations in the area.

Outgoing, loves to ride bikes, and dance.

That's how Jate Hanley-Walker describes her 12-year-old son Kreetay Briggs, Jr.

"He has his own personality," Hanley-Walker said.

Kreetay was at Buckroe Beach Saturday with his mom and their friends. She said it started as a normal afternoon.

Hanley-Walker quickly realized it wasn't fireworks she heard, because she saw people running.

"(Kreetay) He fell to the ground," Hanley-Walker said. "I thought he was scared and he didn't get up and I dragged him and that's when I saw the blood."

A bullet went into Kreetay's stomach. Bullets hit three other people, too.

"I was scared, nervous, overwhelmed, didn't know what to think," Hanley-Walker said.

Darnell Jones said his daughter, 7-year-old Janiyah Jones was celebrating her birthday party at the beach when she was shot.

He says now she's terrified, nervous to go outside, and worried someone will shoot her again. She is now at home recovering.

Hanley- Walker said her son is pulling through. He was in a coma, but now he's up, on the iPad and watching tv.

"Anyone who knows him knows he's very outgoing, friendly, independent, sassy, can be grown but he's my child," Hanley-Walker said.

She says right now, it's one day at a time, but she’s very thankful. She knows this story could have turned out completely different.

"I just want to thank everyone for their prayers," Hanley-Walker said.

There is no suspect information at this time and anyone with tips is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
