HAMPTON, Va. — Members of the Newport News Bomb Squad removed a suspicious package from Coliseum Crossing in Hampton after someone found it outside Petco Wednesday morning.
Emergency dispatchers received a call about the item around 11:15 a.m. Police and firefighters went to the shopping center in Coliseum to investigate. Because it wasn't clear if the package was dangerous, Sgt. Reggie Williams with the Hampton Police Division said officers evacuated several businesses in Coliseum Crossing.
By 3:20 p.m., the package had been "secured and transported off premises," and a tweet from the police division said the item was handed off to the Newport News Bomb Squad.
The stores at the shopping center reopened once police and fire crews cleared the situation.
