HAMPTON, Va. — Heavy rain throughout the day on Saturday left a mess on some streets across Hampton Roads.
The weather system is something Dominion Energy leaders have been watching.
“We’re watching the rain system move out and the cold front move in,” said Tim Eberly, a spokesperson with the company.
He said they’re not expecting many issues. Normal staffing is in place but more crews could get called in if necessary. Eberly said crews saw one notable weather outage overnight.
“That was around 11 p.m. last night in Williamsburg and it was from a tree limb falling on a power line," he said. "It affected around 2,800 customers.”
Eberly said crews restored power there within two hours. He said although they don’t expect many outages, they are keeping an eye out for strong winds knocking down any fallen trees or branches.
The rainy weather even washed out some weekend events like the Cherry Blossom Festival and Don’t Sit on Colon Cancer 5K and Survival Walk in Virginia Beach as well as the grand reopening ceremony of the historic Hampton Carousel.
Hampton city officials didn’t want to spoil all the fun this weekend. So, they opened the carousel at 11 a.m. Some people call the moment nostalgic.
“The rain didn’t matter," said Rose-Marie Gurdon, a Virginia Beach resident. "This is something I’ve been following for several years.”
Gurdon recalls riding the carousel at a young age.
“My parents took us all the time,” she said.
She brought her grandson to the reopening to experience the fun she remembers from years ago.
Activities for Virginia Beach’s Cherry Blossom Festival will go as planned for Monday, March 25-30.
The reopening ceremony for the Hampton Carousel is rescheduled for April 6th. The city is still offering free rides until 8 p.m. Saturday.
