HAMPTON, Va. — Virginia State Police (VSP) are investigating a shooting that injured a driver on Interstate 664 in Hampton Tuesday morning.
Shortly before 6:30 a.m., police say a 51-year-old man was heading north on the interstate, following behind a school bus.
"Victim stated that he observed a black sedan beside him that attempted to merge into his lane to bypass the school bus but was unsuccessful," a VSP spokesperson wrote in a release.
As the black sedan pulled around the bus near the Interstate 64 interchange, authorities say the victim reported hearing a "loud pop" and realized he had been shot. He then pulled over to call 911, prompting police and medics to respond to the scene.
Officials determined the man's gunshot wound was not life-threatening.
The suspect vehicle fled from the scene. Anyone who may have seen the suspect vehicle is urged to call VSP at 804-750-8788.
