HAMPTON -- A pellet gun was located at Lindsay Middle School after a brief investigation Tuesday.

The school was put on lockdown around 11:30 a.m. while police investigated the report.

The pellet gun was found by officers in a student's locker.

The student who brought the pellet gun to school has been charged with disorderly conduct, according to police spokeswoman Ashley Jenrette.

The student who saw the pellet gun did the right thing by coming forward and telling school officials about what they saw, Jenrette added.

The lockdown was lifted around 1:30 p.m. and normal school operations resumed.

Hampton Public Schools spokeswoman Diana Gulotta told 13News Now that parents were notified of the situation via a phone blast. Here's what it said:

Dear Lindsay Middle School Family,

This Mrs. Byrd-Wright, principal at Lindsay. I want to share with you that our building is on lockdown. Earlier today, a student came forward and shared with school administration the possibility of a weapon on school grounds. The administration is currently working with Hampton Police Department to investigate this claim. As soon as the investigation is complete, we will send you more information. Thank you for your support.
