New non-profit coming to Hampton Roads that focuses on affordable housing and no-cost repairs

Rebuilding Together of Hampton Roads is expected to be fully operational by 2025.

HAMPTON, Va. — A new-non profit dedicated to creating access to affordable housing and improving existing housing is already making its mark in Hampton Roads.

Rebuilding Together of Hampton Roads launched its inaugural project on Wednesday, transforming a Hampton grandmother's home which had fallen into a state of disrepair over several years.

"Miss Carmen lives here with her daughter and grandchildren, and it's been a little unsafe for her to get in and out of this house," said Elizabeth Fries, Senior Manager, Affiliate Launches, Rebuilding Together. "Her handrails especially are kind of dangerous, so we needed to take care of that."

Carmen, who has lived in her home since 2011, recently welcomed her daughter and granddaughter into her household.

She is one of countless people in Hampton Roads who have needed a little assistance when it comes to quality housing, or are looking for aid.

According to a March Redfin survey, it showed that more than half (53.2%) of U.S. homeowners and renters said that housing affordability would have a significant impact on who they vote for in November.

"When you look at the housing stock of Hampton Roads — over 50% was built before 1980, so we are really talking about an aging housing stock, so there are very needed services here," said Fries.

While this organization does not build completely new houses, it does provide no-cost, essential home repairs and renovations to low-income families, veterans, and older adults in need.

Fries said it is just one small part of the overall solution.

"We may not be able to get everything done in your home but we will prioritize what absolutely needs to get done in your home for the safety of the homeowner and his or her family," said Fries.

Beginning in 2025, Rebuilding Together of Hampton Roads will serve the neighborhoods of Hampton and Newport News with plans to grow in the area.
