Former NBA star Michael Kidd-Gilchrist to increase access to speech therapy

Former NBA star Michael Kidd Gilchrist stopped by Hampton University today and shared his story with families at the Peak Childhood Center.

HAMPTON, Va. — Former NBA star Michael Kidd-Gilchrist visited Hampton University to share his story with families at the Peake Childhood Center on Tuesday.

Kidd-Gilchrist said he's stuttered his entire life and is now on a mission to increase access to speech therapy.

"I don't know myself without stuttering. So as much as I can say I don't, I don't like it, I appreciate it now that I'm older," Kidd-Gilchrist said.

While visiting, he learned about Peake Childhood Center's program and what they do regarding speech therapy.

"Hampton University students, they come to our center twice a week during the school semester. And they are able to screen all of our young children to see if they have a need for any assistance to improve their speech and language," a  Peake Childhood Center official said.

Kid Gilchrist Foundation Change and Impact donated $10,000 to the Peak Childhood Center to support access to speech therapy services for children who stutter in Hampton Roads.

To donate or enroll your child visit the Peake Childhood Center's website.
