HAMPTON, Va. — Around 5:15 p.m. on Monday, Hampton Police received a call that a shooting had occurred in the 400 block of Newport News Avenue.
When they arrived, they discovered two men in separate homes suffering from gunshot wounds. Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue arrived and determined one of the men's injuries were not life-threatening, while the other's were. Both men were taken to the hospital, and the man with the life-threatening injuries succumbed to his injuries while there.
Police said the preliminary investigation revealed that the incident occurred because the two neighbors got into a verbal argument outside. After arguing for some time, both men began firing gunshots at each other.
The Major Crimes Unit will continue to investigate the motive of the incident.
