HAMPTON, Va. — A Hampton jury convicted a man on Wednesday who tried to escape arrest at the entrance of Langley Air Force Base after being caught illegally possessing a gun.

According to a press release from the Office of the Attorney General, Thaison Thanh Nguyen was found guilty of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, carrying a concealed weapon and operating a vehicle without a license.

Prosecutors say that on Nov. 13, 2019, Nguyen tried to make a U-turn at Langley Air Force Base, which brought him into contact with security at the gate as he entered the base. Military police learned he did not have a driver's license and smelled marijuana coming from his vehicle.

Officers with the Hampton Police Department were called and found a firearm in Nguyen's car, which is a problem since he was previously convicted of a violent felony. That's when prosecutors say he tried to run away, but he was caught and taken into custody about 50 yards away.

Nguyen is facing a five-year minimum sentence for the offense. He is scheduled for sentencing on Dec. 12.
