HAMPTON, Va. — A major investment for Hampton University (HU)!
The Virginia-based technology and engineering company, Leidos, announced a $750,000 donation to support the next generation of innovators at the university.
According to the institution, this contribution will support students and faculty across multiple disciplines, including the School of Science, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Education and various technological advancements on campus.
“This donation will directly impact our students by providing them with vital scholarship opportunities, hands-on learning experiences, and access to advanced technology," said HU President Darrell Williams.
The partnership will also help establish the Leidos Innovation Studio at Hampton University, providing real-world experience and enabling students to intern with the company. According to the university, the aim is to provide valuable exposure to industry practices and professionals.
“It’s giving students access to real-world problems and situations where they are getting their hands on things when they transition and graduate from the university," said Chief Inclusion Officer at Leidos, Tashi Carper. "Hopefully, we can attract that talent into Leidos. This is the work they are going to be doing."
“This gift reflects the strength of our relationship with the school and our ongoing commitment to fostering innovation, developing talent, and ensuring students have the tools and experiences they need to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world," said Leidos CEO, Tom Bell.
Williams referred to cybersecurity as an example of a critical need in the U.S. and globally, and it is important to equip students with the tools to lead the workforce.
"An investment in real-time learning at the University tied to a company that is at the forefront of this capability is a real investment in the future of America," said Williams, who once served as a vice president and managing director at Leidos.
This is part of the company's commitment to supporting STEM education, including at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).
