Home damaged after morning fire in Hampton

Hampton Division of Fire & Rescue responded to a house fire around 2:47 a.m. No one was at the home during the time of the fire.

HAMPTON, Va. — A Hampton home is destroyed after an early morning fire on Teakwood Court near Aberdeen Road.

Hampton Division of Fire & Rescue responded to a house fire around 2:47 a.m. When crews arrived, they found the house engulfed in flames.

“With the flames and the blaze getting so big, it was kind of starting to bring the heat over here and travel this way,” said Nathaniel Bryant who lives next door.

It was a scary scene for Nathaniel Bryant and his family after his next-door neighbor’s house went up in flames.

Bryant woke up in the middle of the night after being alerted by his godson. He said he could see the fire through his window. He said it looked like flames were coming from the back window of the home.

“It started consuming the whole house," he said. "It was the roof and everything on fire and it started sparking from the power lines.”

He called 911 and tried calling his neighbor who he said was out of town during the fire.

“Eventually, he wind up calling me back but he found out about it on the news this morning,” he said.

A battalion chief at the scene said when firefighters arrived, smoke and flames were through the roof. Firefighters attacked the fire from the outside. The fire was under control by 3:16 a.m.

No one was home during the fire, and none of the firefighters who responded were injured. Battalion Chief Anthony Chittum said the Red Cross will assist those impacted.

Bryant said his neighbor is heartbroken.

“He’s kind of devastated because like I said it was him and his mom there. His mom passed away,” he said. “Everything in that house is just kind of sentimental value of what he had left of his mom.”

Bryant said his neighbor is trying to figure out the next steps. He added he plans to support him throughout this process.

“I couldn’t even imagine myself seeing this, you know," Bryant said. "You leave one moment and your home and everything is intact, everything is perfectly fine. Then, you come back to a home that’s not even there. Not the way you left it. It’s not even inhabitable.”

Hampton Fire officials couldn't confirm how many people lived at the home this morning. At last check, they were working to get in contact with the homeowner.
