HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- The City of Hampton is getting ready to open a new multi-million-dollar walkway.
The grand opening of more than two miles of the Hampton's new "Waterwalk" is scheduled for May 12.
The project cost about $5.4 million, with 60 percent of the funding covered by federal and state dollars.
City officials say the investment could boost city revenues, allowing safe and easy foot traffic between shopping, hotels and the Hampton Coliseum.
Waterwalk's pathways begin near Air Power Park and end on Mercer Avenue. That stretch features an elevated walkway over Newmarket Creek.
A second segment of Waterwalk is accessed at Coliseum Drive near the Bass Pro Shop.
Parts of this project are already open, but the grand opening celebration is set for Saturday, May 12.
Workers hope to connect the two trails by next spring.
