HAMPTON, Va. — On Wednesday, Hampton City Schools sent a message to families addressing unfounded reports of school safety threats causing concern throughout the community.
District leadership said it’s been made aware of rumors and social media posts circulating within the community, including mentions of potential school shootings, weapons found at schools, and shootings at bus stops.
None of the threats have been deemed credible, according to the school division’s ongoing investigation alongside Hampton police. They said the concerning social media posts appear to also be circulating in neighboring districts, as well as in other parts of the country.
Furthermore, Hampton City Schools said it has protocols in place to not only address school safety but to also take a proactive approach in strengthening security.
The division assures it will continue to investigate any concerns brought to its attention thoroughly. In the case of a safety situation, families will be alerted by their child’s school or the school division.
Community members are asked to contact the division directly if they receive a message or come across something concerning online, rather than spreading it further. They can do so by contacting the Safe School Hotline at 757-727-2255 (CALL).
